174 Trees Cut Down Overnight in Tashkent: Damage Estimated at Over 1.4 Billion Soums
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A video circulated on social media showing trees being cut down along Bobur Street in Tashkent’s Yakkasaray district during the night of 25 October.
An inspection by the State Environmental Supervision Inspectorate under the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change confirmed the illegal felling of 174 trees and shrubs along the section from the intersection of Nukus and Bobur streets.
According to the ministry, the total environmental damage is estimated at 1 billion 460 million 952 thousand soums. The collected materials have been submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office for legal action.
The Tashkent city administration has taken the situation under personal control. Strict measures will be taken against those responsible for environmental damage. To prevent similar cases in the future, coordinated action will be carried out jointly with the Ministry of Ecology.
In compensation for the destroyed greenery, 62,100 ornamental trees and shrubs are planned to be planted.
