Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Fifth-seeded Swiss Stefanie Voegele and eighth-seeded Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan were a pair of first-round winners Monday at the US$220,000 Tashkent Open.
Voegele grounded Russian Vitalia Diatchenko 6-3, 7-5, while Voskoboeva held of Portugal’s Neuza Silva 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 on the hardcourts at Olympic Tennis School.
This week’s top seeds are Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova and last week’s Guangzhou champion Shahar Peer of Israel.
Romanian Sorana Cirstea beat German Sabine Lisicki in last year’s finale here. Both women, however, are not competing here this week.
The 2009 Tashkent titlist will earn US$37,000.
