New format of dialogue between Uzbekistan and Turkey established
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - The first meeting of the Uzbek-Turkish top-level strategic cooperation council was held in Ankara on 19 February.
The Council is a new dialogue format in the history of bilateral relations. It was created in accordance with the Joint Statement of the Heads of State of 2018.
This body operates under the co-chairmanship of the Presidents of Uzbekistan and Turkey. It defines a joint strategy for the development of cooperation in the fields of politics, security and defense, economics and trade, investment, tourism, energy, transport and transit, agriculture and forestry, culture, education, science and technology, innovation, health, as well as in other areas, of mutual interest.
The President of the Republic of Turkey welcomed the head of our state and expressed satisfaction with the strengthening of interaction between the parliaments, state organizations and business circles of the two countries. Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted that he comprehensively supports the joint projects of Turkey and Uzbekistan.
The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev thanked the leader and people of Turkey for the hospitality and great respect of the delegation of our country.
- This meeting is a vivid embodiment of the current high level of strategic partnership between our countries. Of course, the council will become an important basis for the implementation of priority tasks to bring trade between our countries to five billion dollars in the coming years. It’s advisable for us to consolidate the results of this meeting and now decide on the agenda for the upcoming meeting next year and the main areas of our cooperation, the head of state said.
Uzbek-Turkish cooperation has intensified significantly over the past three years. The state visit of Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Turkey in October 2017 and Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Uzbekistan in April 2018 strengthened mutual political trust and opened up great opportunities for a fruitful partnership.
The results of intensive contacts and mutual aspirations are reflected in economic cooperation. So, if in 2016 mutual trade turnover amounted to almost 1.2 billion US dollars, then in 2019 this figure exceeded 2.5 billion dollars. In Uzbekistan, there are more than 1.3 thousand enterprises with the participation of Turkish investments. Investment projects worth US$500 million are being implemented.
Cooperation is expanding in the transport sector. So, in 2019, the volume of road transport increased by 33 percent, by rail - by 17 percent, air transportation - by 42 percent.
In addition, last year 64 thousand Turkish tourists visited Uzbekistan.
It was noted that thanks to the support of the leaders of the two countries and the favorable conditions created, the scale of cooperation could be expanded even further.
The ministers of trade of Uzbekistan and Turkey spoke at the meeting, who presented detailed information on the state of bilateral cooperation.
During the negotiations, a wide range of issues of interstate cooperation, ways to solve them, key tasks for the future were considered, the parties agreed on the implementation of joint projects.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev invited Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Uzbekistan at the next meeting of the Strategic Cooperation Council.
