Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - From 24 to 25 July 2019 in Tashkent, in the UNESCO Office in Uzbekistan, an expert meeting “Development of the UNESCO program“ Man and the Biosphere ”(MAB) in Uzbekistan” will be held, during which the inclusion of the Nijne-Amudarya State Biosphere Reserve (NABR) into the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO, as well as the issue of preparing a report on the Chatkal Biosphere Reserve will be considered.
The meeting is organized by the UNESCO Office in Uzbekistan in cooperation with the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection and the National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for UNESCO.
Experts will review the draft NADR application for inclusion in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, discuss the MAB program and the concept of biosphere reserves (BR), as well as the main criteria and requirements of the Lima Action Plan for biosphere reserves included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The stakeholder consultation process is a key stage in the BR nomination, which is also very important for the zoning process. This round is necessary to familiarize stakeholders with the concept of BR, to obtain important information about their perceptions and problems for the first zoning project. During the consultation process, a common vision on the projected BR should be developed.
The UNESCO Man and Biosphere Program (MAB) was founded in 1971 to strengthen public awareness of biosphere issues. The goal of the program is to encourage cooperation between states in such areas as interdisciplinary research, increasing scientific evidence and educational work in the management of natural resources. The program is aimed at improving human relations with the environment on a global scale, through the promotion of research on the interaction of man and the environment, increasing the understanding of universal environmental issues. Today, the World Network of Biosphere Reserves numbers 686 biosphere reserves in 122 countries, including 20 cross-border sites, and is a dynamic and interactive network of objects of excellence.
In Uzbekistan, the Man and Biosphere program has been operating since 1978, when the Chatkal Biosphere Reserve was included in the International Network of Biosphere Reserves of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Program. NABR was established in 2013 on the territory of Beruni and Amudarya regions of Karakalpakstan. It is a rich ecosystem of tugai forests with a total area of 68,717.8 hectares and is a unique natural resource of Uzbekistan.
