Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov stated that discovery of Alexandria Oxiana is breakthrough in the historical and archaeological science of Uzbekistan.
A group of scientists led by academician Edward Rtveladze as a result of many years of research has succeeded in establishing that the site of ancient settlement, called Kampyrtepa and located in the Surkhandarya region, is Alexandria Oxiana. These are the ruins of a port city on the Amu Darya (in ancient times Ox), laid down at the end of the 4th century BC and existed before the beginning of the 1st century AD.
The sensational discovery of scientists caused a strong resonance among the Uzbek and world community, the scientific world and the media.
It should be noted that the discovery of scientists will be an additional impetus for the development of the tourism industry in Uzbekistan, will attract tourists from all over the world and will serve to popularize our country's cultural heritage abroad.
“This is a real breakthrough in the historical and archaeological science of Uzbekistan. We believe that this wonderful news will arouse the interest of our young people in our history, our rich cultural heritage,” Aziz Abdukhakimov, Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, said at a press conference today. He added that a special program will be developed to popularize this unique place, as well as the protection of the historical monument.
“It is planned to create an appropriate infrastructure for more convenient inspection of the monument by tourists. Also, perhaps, a museum dedicated to Alexandria Oxiana will be opened, ” said Abdukhakimov.
Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan Edward Rtveladze told about how the excavations at the site were carried out and the process of identifying Alexandria Oxiana.
“The town of Kampyrtepa was discovered in 1979 during route surveys of the archaeological sites of the Amu Darya valley from Termez to Kelif. Then there was unbearable heat. The find made a huge impression on me. The mound was small and compact. We discovered an ancient Greek temple, a citadel, a gate, a terrace, which descended down to the line of the Amu Darya. The first shards of ceramics of the Hellenistic era were also found here,” Rtveladze said.
The scientist added that he is very cautious in his hypotheses, and proves them for decades. But this time, according to E. Rtveladze, there is no doubt that mentioned in the writings of the ancient Greek historian and geographer Ptolemy and which is a unique monument of Hellenistic culture in Central Asia, Alexandria Oxiana is located in Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan.
