UN High Commissioner for Human Rights arrives in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 10 May, a delegation of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) led by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein arrived in Uzbekistan with three-day visit. Director of the National Center for Human Rights of Uzbekistan Akmal Saidov and the UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Stephan Priesner welcomed the delegation.
During the official visit of the delegation of the United Nations High Commissioner Office for Human Rights on 10-12 May 2017, to Uzbekistan, discussions will take place on the current state of cooperation between Uzbekistan and OHCHR, as well as areas of interaction and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
While presenting the report on the human rights situation around the world, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeyd Ra’ad al-Hussein, noted the progress of Uzbekistan, the UN Radio reports.
According to him, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev adopts laws aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the justice system, ensuring fair and independent trials.
Jahon news agency reported that he highly appreciated the fact that ensuring the rule of law and additional reform of judicial and legal systems as one of the priority directions of the state development in 2017-2021 years.
Zeyd Ra’ad al-Hussein welcomed the initiatives of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, related to ensuring human interests, which, according to the High Commissioner, meet high international standards, indicate the country’s openness to dialogue with its partners in order to achieve one of the priority goals - steady rise of the well-being of people. He expressed readiness to assist Uzbekistan in implementing the relevant provisions of the adopted Strategy of Actions.
The High Commissioner spoke positively about Uzbekistan’s cooperation with the UN human rights structures.
A visit of Zeyd Ra’ad al-Hussein to Uzbekistan will contribute to further strengthening of cooperation and will allow discussing promising areas of cooperation between the parties in the field of human rights protection.
