Governors of Tashkent region Saint Petersburg hold talks

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of Uzbekistan led by governor of Tashkent region Shukurullo Babaev is paying visit to Saint Petersburg to establish mutual social-economic and cultural relations between Uzbekistan and Russia.
On 13 March, the government Tashkent region held negotiations with the Governor of Saint Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko.
Shukurullo Babaev said that the leadership of Uzbekistan pays great attention to development of the interregional cooperation with Russia. He said that Uzbekistan and Russia will sign an intergovernmental agreement on inter-regional cooperation within upcoming visit of the Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Russia.
The head of the Uzbek delegation said that the agreement will set legal framework and help to further development of trade-economic, investment and cultural-humanitarian cooperation between regions of two nations.
“Current visit, we consider as the first step in establishing long-term, partnership relations between our regions, as well as good opportunity to develop joint measures on expanding mutual beneficial cooperation in various areas,” Babaev said.
Governor Georgy Poltavchenko said that economic relations are recovering between Uzbekistan and Saint Petersburg in recent years. In 2016, trade turnover between Saint Petersburg and Uzbekistan rose by 35% compared to 2015 and reached US$124.7 million.
Saint Petersburg’s exports to Uzbekistan made up US$84.3 million and imports from Uzbekistan – US$40.4 million.
During the meeting, the sides discussed perspectives of mutual beneficial cooperation between companies of Uzbekistan and Russia on such areas as industry, export of fresh and processed agriculture products, issues of establishing cooperation in culture and tourism.
The sides also considered issues of labour migration and opening of the General Consulate of Uzbekistan in Saint Petersburg.
The parties reached the agreement on organization of the visit of the St. Petersburg Administration and business circles to Uzbekistan in November 2017, as well as organization of videoconferences among regional entrepreneurs on a systemic basis.
It should be noted that trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Russia reached US$4.2 billion in 2016, which is 4.9% less compared to 2015.
