Uzbekistan modernizes irrigation network in south for US$112.6m

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan completed reconstruction of Amu Zang channel in Surkhandarya region with the cost of US$112.6 million, RIA Novosti reported quoting source in the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management of Uzbekistan.
The project envisaged modernization of three pump stations, sewage disposal plants and irrigation-drainage network, creation of agriculture service centers, purchase of equipment to control water use at seven administrative regions with population of 760,000 people.
Japan’s Kubota Corp and China’s CNTIC were main suppliers of technologic equipment within the project.
The project was financed due to the loan of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for US$73.5 million, issued to Uzbekistan in 2003, and the funds of the Uzbek side.
The Amu-Zang irrigation system was constructed in 1973 and includes three pump stations. In early 2005, about 80% of equipment of the channel required rehabilitation. The modernization helped to ensure to supply irrigation water to about 300,000 hectares.
