Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On the 22 May 2013, in recognition of the International Day for Biodiversity a contest for best presentations regarding the actions of oil and gas companies to reduce their impacts on biodiversity, and new technologies for biodiversity conservation has been held at the ‘Gubkin’ Russian State University of Oil and Gas (RSUOG) Tashkent Branch.
This contest has been organised by the joint UNDP-GEF project ‘Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Uzbekistan`s Oil-and-Gas Sector Policies and Operations’, with the support of the State committee for Nature Protection, the ‘Uzbekneftegas’ national holding company, and oil and gas companies operating in Uzbekistan.
According to The Economics of ecosystems and biodiversity (TEEB) report (2012), significant progress has been made around the world to reduce impacts on biodiversity from such upstream activities as drilling, seismic studies, construction, production, maintenance, and transportation. As stated in the executive summary TEEB for business published in 2010, among the companies which are more likely to report actions to reduce impacts on biodiversity (36% versus 24% overall) are the oil and gas companies.
How do these actions of the oil and gas companies in reducing impacts on biodiversity differ from one another, and what do they have in common? Which of these experiences are applicable in Uzbekistan? Teams of students from the ‘Gubkin’ Russian State University of Oil and Gas (RSUOG) Tashkent Branch have presented their views on these issues at the presentation contest, which is held on 22 May in recognition of the International Day for Biodiversity. The students have had an opportunity not only to present their vision for the conservation of biodiversity, but have also enhanced their knowledge in the field of new approaches for the conservation of biodiversity in the oil-and-gas industry. Thus, students have been offered an introductory presentation on the offset (compensation) schemes, which are a new direction in the field of biodiversity conservation, used by the oil and gas companies in their operations in the developed countries.
In December 2012 a study tour to Australia was organised for a team of Uzbekistan biodiversity and oil-and-gas industry experts, including a representative of the ‘Uzbekneftegas’ National Holding Company, to learn best practices in using offset schemes to prevent the irretrievable loss of biodiversity. The tour was organised by the above project. Now specialists have shared their knowledge with the students thus contributing to further dissemination of best biodiversity conservation practices among future employees of the oil and gas industry.
