Uzbekistan increases fruits, vegetables production in 1H

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan produced 1.917 million tonnes of vegetables in the first half of 2012, the Ministry of Economy and the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan said in a statement.
Uzbekistan created 7,600 hectares of new gardens, including 2,600 hectares of intensive gardens, 3,800 hectares of vineyards. The country also reconstructed 8,500 hectares of gardens and 6,000 hectares of vineyards.
Some 9,456 greenhouses were created in Uzbekistan at 266.8 hectares. In order to expand material-technical base of storing fruits and vegetables, Uzbekistan commissioned 22 new cold storages with capacity of 6,300 tonnes and modernized three cold storages with capacity of 2,000 tonnes.
In the reporting period, Uzbekistan produced 1.917 million tonnes of vegetables (+14.5%), 983,800 tonnes of potatoes (+12.5%), 120,900 tonnes of melons (+12.2%), 642,800 tonnes of fruits and berries (+10.4%), and 17,600 tonnes of grapes (+ 12.5%). The volume of processing of fruit and vegetables grew by 11.7%, including vegetables – by 14.4% and fruits – by 7.7%.
In order to develop animal husbandry in the reporting period, some 406 livestock breeding entities with 11,800 heads of cattle, 336 poultry farms with 2 million heads of birds, 333 bee farms,359 fish farms were created in Uzbekistan. The commpecial banks issued some 38.6 billion soums to help farmers to buy cattle.
In the result, total number of cattle grew by 6.2% to 9.783 million heads. Production of meat and milk rose by 7% year-on-year in January-June 2012 and egg production rose by 16,8% to 1.936 million units.
