Uzbek officials hold meeting with IAEA Director General

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- As part of the participation of the delegation of Uzbekistan in the 65th regular session of the IAEA General Conference, a meeting was held with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
During the meeting, Rafael Mariano Grossi praised the active, despite the coronavirus pandemic, the dynamics of bilateral cooperation in 2021. This is evidenced by the organization in the country of several national seminars and workshops with the participation of IAEA experts. The successful implementation of the Agency's expert mission to review the nuclear infrastructure of the republic, which was the first activity of the Agency during the pandemic, was especially noted.
The Director General stressed that he was well informed about the interaction of the IAEA departments with the organizations of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
He noted that the measures taken by Uzbekistan are under his constant attention, and in this regard, the Agency is ready to continue to provide all kinds of support to the Republic of Uzbekistan in the development of nuclear infrastructure and the introduction of nuclear technologies in the national economy of the country.
The head of the Agency positively assessed the efforts of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the field of human development in the nuclear industry, in particular, the creation of new educational institutions in the field of nuclear and engineering physics in Uzbekistan, the sending of Uzbek specialists to advanced countries for education, as well as their acquisition of practical experience.
The meeting noted the successful cooperation in the development of Uzbekistan's cancer treatment program. With the support of the IAEA, modern equipment was supplied to the republic, which was financed by the resources of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). He stressed that a new agreement was recently signed between the IAEA and the IDB, which aims to expand access to diagnosis and treatment of cancer in women in 17 countries.
Grossi also said that the IDB applied with a proposal to attract a new loan in the amount of about US$35 million within the framework of projects to build technical capacity and purchase medical equipment for the Republic of Uzbekistan.
