Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The role of the SCO in stabilizing the situation and ensuring sustainable economic growth in Afghanistan will increase. Director of the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies (ISMI) Eldor Aripov shared such an assessment at the conference “Russia and Uzbekistan facing the challenges of development and security at a new historical stage of interaction”, which was held in Tashkent on 20 September.
According to him, this point of view is due to the fact that today all of Afghanistan’s neighbors are either members or observers of the SCO and have close economic ties. Thus, the SCO member states are among the main trade partners of Afghanistan.
The volume of their trade with Afghanistan is US$11 billion, which is almost 80% of the total trade turnover of Afghanistan with foreign countries. More than 80% of Afghanistan’s needs for electricity and more than 20% for food wheat and flour are covered by exports from the SCO member states.
The SCO countries are particularly interested in preventing Afghanistan from becoming a source of threats to regional security again.
“Nobody wants to allow the use of Afghan territory for subversive actions against our countries, export of radical ideology, terrorism to neighboring countries,” the expert emphasized.
