Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The efficiency of production and sales of products is determined, first of all, by its competitiveness. The Institute for Forecasting and Macroeconomic Research (IFMR) conducted a study to assess the international competitiveness of fruit and vegetable products. After analyzing the trade indicators of competitiveness on the basis of the identified comparative advantages, the experts determined for which fruit and vegetable products in Uzbekistan and the processing industry are the most competitive in the world market.
According to the results of calculations, out of 35 analyzed groups of goods in 2015-2020. Uzbekistan had significant comparative advantages in only 16 product groups. Taken together, these product groups represented nearly 40% of total Uzbek fruit and vegetable exports in 2019.
One of the most common indicators for assessing international competitiveness is the RCA (Revealed Comparative Advantage) index. To calculate the RCA Index for fruits and vegetables and their processed products produced in Uzbekistan, the UN Comtrade statistical database, as well as data from the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Statistics, was used. The calculations were based on the indicators for 4-digit codes of TN VED groups 07.08.20 of exports of Uzbekistan and for similar export items in the whole world for the period 2015-2020. at current prices in US dollars.
Considering that RCA deals only with exports, not taking into account imports, which can lead to incorrect results, the IAMI experts also calculated the Lafey Index (LFI) for the export of fruit and vegetable products. The peculiarity of the Lafey Index (LFI) is that it allows you to determine the contribution of individual commodity groups to the normalized trade balance of the country.
For the calculations, the data of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Statistics for 2015-2020 were used. According to calculations, out of 35 analyzed groups of goods, Uzbekistan in 2015-2020. had a comparative advantage in 24 product groups. 10 groups of goods, according to the results obtained, did not have comparative advantages for export to foreign markets.
19 groups of goods for which Uzbekistan has a clear comparative advantage in foreign markets include Apricots, cherries and cherries, peaches, plums; Grapes; Dried fruits; Canned vegetables; Dried leguminous vegetables; Carrot; Tomatoes, etc.
The study showed that most of the fruits and vegetables in Uzbekistan are quite competitive in the world market. The next step can be the development of a Program for increasing the competitiveness of fruit and vegetable products and products of their processing. Within its framework, it is necessary to focus on certain types of fruits and vegetables, taking into account the preferences in the world market (in terms of varieties and quality) and the existing potential of the industry in Uzbekistan.
The Institute for Forecasting and Macroeconomic Research, in turn, will continue this study by conducting a deeper analysis based on the 10-digit TNVED.
