A meeting takes place with the Director of the UN Regional Office
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 18 May 2021, First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Sodiq Safoev met with the Director of the Regional Bureau of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Asia and the Pacific Indrika Ratwatte.
During the meeting, the current state and prospects of Uzbekistan's interaction with the UNHCR on the topical issue of ensuring the rights and interests of citizens, as well as in the context of the efforts of the international community to support and provide humanitarian assistance in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, were discussed.
Indrika Ratwatte shared information about the results of his visit to Afghanistan in March this year and his forthcoming visit to this country these days.
According to the head of the regional bureau, the current policy of Uzbekistan is aimed at deepening and strengthening partnerships with the UN system at the national, regional and global levels in order to promote human development, including the eradication of statelessness.
The Regional Director highly appreciated the progress made by Uzbekistan in this direction, noting that in the future, it is expected to provide support to the government of our country in joining the Convention on Statelessness and the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees of 1951.
The need to continue work to ensure human rights, to improve legislation in accordance with international standards was emphasized.
