Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held a virtual joint workshop with the experts from the University of Freiburg on Integrated Land Use Management Systems (ILUMS) in Uzbekistan on 9 February 2022.
The seminar was aimed at presenting research work conducted within the framework of the “Central Asian Desert Initiative (CADI)” project to national partners from Uzbekistan. The representatives of the State Forestry Committee of Uzbekistan, Master and PhD students from Southern Agricultural Research Institute established at the Kashkadarya branch of the Research Institute of Cereals and Legumes, Tashkent State Agrarian University, and Bukhara branch of Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers took part at the workshop.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in discussions on the adoption of best agroforestry practices, evaluated the current state of Integrated Land Use Management Systems in the region and exchanged potential ideas on future collaboration between organizations. Representatives of academic institutions from Uzbekistan expressed their interest in future academic cooperation through joint postgraduate programs to strengthen the capacities of local specialists.
Professors from the University of Freiburg discussed the potential for agroforestry as a profitable enterprise in Uzbekistan, providing elaborate information on the challenges for co-management agreements and recommendations for future work. Authors present evidence-based research and case studies from pilot sites in the Bukhara and Navoi provinces. Recommendations address the need to reform the legal framework with regard to agroforestry and land use, improve access to knowledge transfer and education, and provide financial and institutional support for community-based partnerships.
Furthermore, the researchers provided recommendations on co-management in agroforestry, including the establishment of a control system with regard to the conservation, restoration and reproduction of forests, establishment of an accounting and monitoring system and an integrated planning and monitoring system for the production and management of various types of forestry products.
This activity was implemented under funding support of the “Central Asian Desert Initiative” project being implemented by FAO as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
