Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 14 July, the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade held a videoconference in the form of a ceremony to award Sumy Chakrabarti with the Dustlik Order, who served as President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) from 2012 July to July 2020.
On behalf of the Government of the Republic, the ceremony was held by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sardor Umurzakov.
The relevant Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan noted the merits of Sumy Chakrabarti "in establishing strategic partnerships and expanding multifaceted cooperation" between Uzbekistan and the EBRD.
In addition, the document emphasized the contribution of S. Chakrabarti “to increase the efficiency of the program of socio-economic reforms carried out in the country, as well as to intensify the processes of creating a favorable investment climate and business environment in the Republic”.
During the ceremony, special appreciation was expressed for the support provided by S. Chakrabarti in carrying out consistent reforms in Uzbekistan, including assistance in drafting a law on public-private partnerships and a strategy for developing the capital market, as well as reforming the banking sector and state-owned enterprises and a number of other issues.
Participants of the event noted that thanks to the assistance of S. Chakrabarti, the EBRD in one short time - in just three years - became one of the key partners of Uzbekistan: the portfolio of joint projects grew from zero to 1.2 billion euros and currently covers a wide range of priority areas including energy, infrastructure construction, financing of small and medium-sized business projects. Also under development is a portfolio of projects worth more than 1 billion euros.
Chakrabarti, in turn, said: “It is a great honor for me to receive such an award from the President of Uzbekistan, and I am extremely flattered that the successes achieved in the course of our cooperation have been so highly appreciated by the Head of State. From the very beginning of our active work in Uzbekistan, I was firmly convinced of the huge economic potential of this country and now, seeing the results of our efforts, I am glad to realize that I was not mistaken in my opinion. I’m sure that even having terminated my powers as the head of the EBRD, I will continue to cooperate with Uzbekistan.”
At the end of the ceremony, participants expressed hope for the further development of mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EBRD by maintaining the achieved high level of trust and partnership.
