Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 18 January 2020, an open dialogue was held at Westminster International University in Tashkent on the topic “Prospects for the development of the energy sector in Uzbekistan”. At the meeting, representatives of the Ministry of Energy and the Uzatom Agency made presentations.
At the same time, a misinterpretation of torn out of context presentations on nuclear technology safety issues has spread in social networks.
In particular, the slide telling about the effect of radiation and radiation on various genetic mutations, as well as about the negative impact on nature, shown on the example of the exclusion zone near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, is incorrectly interpreted and distributed.
In this regard, we clarify that the speaker during his speech told the following:
“Currently, many myths that are not related to reality are spread around nuclear energy and the use of nuclear technology. One of these myths is that genetic effects in offspring arise from exposure to radiation. In history there have been cases of exposure to significant radiation to the population and nature. There is a myth that two-headed animals or mutants are found in the forests of Chernobyl. Or in Japan, after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, children with genetic abnormalities are now born. On the following slides you can see that currently no people live in the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, no economic activity is being conducted, and therefore nature is blooming. In the photographs you can see that two-headed animals do not live there. Also in the next photo you can see children born to parents who received high doses during the bombing. ”
In addition to dispelling these myths, the event explained in detail the advantages of nuclear power plants and the level of safety of modern nuclear technologies.
