Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation led by the chairman of the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan on international relations, foreign economic relations, foreign investment and tourism Alisher Kurmanov is on a working visit to the capital of Germany.
Members of the delegation, which included representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Election Commission and the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, took part in the discussion on the topic "Uzbekistan before the elections: domestic political reforms and foreign policy prospects." The event, organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, was attended by representatives of socio-political, expert and analytical circles and the media in Germany, as well as international organizations.
The participants were thoroughly acquainted with the large-scale reforms being carried out in Uzbekistan in the socio-political and socio-economic spheres, initiatives for the development of regional cooperation, and the priorities of our country's foreign policy.
Particular attention was also paid to the preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the republic, innovations in the electoral legislation and the party building system of Uzbekistan. In particular, it was noted that the parliamentary elections scheduled for December 22, 2019 will be fundamentally different from the previous ones and held on the basis of a conceptually new electoral law, the Electoral Code of Uzbekistan, developed jointly with the OSCE Office for Democratic Freedoms and Human Rights and the Venice Commission.
In turn, the speaker on foreign policy issues of the Social Democratic Party of Germany faction Niels Schmid welcomed the active foreign policy and openness policy of Uzbekistan, the German side expressed readiness to provide full support for this course.
Hertha Deubler-Gmelin, professor of law and former German Federal Minister of Justice, highly appreciated the reforms being carried out in our country in the field of public and state building, and the rule of law. She emphasized the importance of the upcoming parliamentary elections to strengthen democratic principles in Uzbekistan. It was noted that the reforms carried out in the field of electoral legislation create the necessary conditions for transparent democratic elections and free expression of the will of citizens.
During the lively discussion, the German participants in the event received answers to their questions, expressed their opinions and recommendations, taking into account the international practice of holding elections.
The members of the Uzbek delegation also took part in the round tables organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the German-Central Asia Parliamentary Group of the German Bundestag. The participants of the events shared their positive assessments of the large-scale reform process being carried out in Uzbekistan at the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. German experts emphasized “the exemplary regional policy of Uzbekistan, aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and cooperation between neighboring countries, which became the impetus for turning Central Asia into a region of wide opportunities.
The impressive results achieved by Uzbekistan in the process of reforming the country's social and political life in a short period of time also contributed to the decision of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation to hold a regular consultative meeting of the heads of its representative offices in Asia in the spring of 2020 in Tashkent, as stated by Norbert Lammert, chairman of the board of the fund. He welcomed the ongoing political and legal reforms in Uzbekistan aimed at strengthening the role of parliament and political parties in the country's social and political life, and also noted the growing role of Uzbekistan in the development of regional cooperation in Central Asia and its important place in the wider region of Asia.
The German experts who took part in the discussion also emphasized the tangible results of reforms in the field of civil society formation, freedom of speech and reform of the electoral process achieved in Uzbekistan.
In accordance with the program of the visit, meetings of the Uzbek delegation are also scheduled in the departments of the Federal President and the Federal Chancellor, the Bundestag and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, during which it is planned to discuss the state and prospects of development of bilateral relations, as well as exchange views on pressing issues on the international agenda.
