Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 11-13 November 2019, a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov paid a visit to Brussels.
Within the framework of the trip, the 15th meeting of the Uzbekistan-EU Cooperation Council and bilateral meetings with the leaders of the institutions of the European Union, the Belgian Senate and the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO, as well as the presentation of the investment and trade and economic potential of the republic, were held.
During the negotiations, the current state and prospects for the development of bilateral relations were discussed. An exchange of views took place on pressing regional and international issues.
The European side welcomed the completion of ratification by Uzbekistan of all 27 international conventions and agreements necessary for obtaining the status of beneficiary of “GSP +”, and confirmed its readiness to assist in the preparation of the application of the Uzbek side for this status.
The EU will also support Uzbek suppliers in expanding the range of products manufactured in Uzbekistan and their volumes for export to the markets of the EU countries.
In addition, after a meeting with the European Commission’s Director General for International Cooperation and Development, Cohen Doens, two agreements were signed on financing technical assistance projects “The Republic of Uzbekistan Joining the World Trade Organization” and “EU Development Contribution to the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea Region” .
The amount of grant funds allocated by the European side in the framework of the project on the republic’s accession to the WTO is 5 million euros. The project provides assistance to Uzbekistan in the process of joining this organization as a whole, including the preparation of the necessary documents, increasing the knowledge of Uzbek specialists under WTO agreements and the international trading system.
Grants from the European Union to the Multi-Partner Trust Fund in the amount of 5.2 million euros will be used to implement projects in the areas of socio-economic development and mitigate the consequences of the Aral Sea tragedy in the Aral Sea region.
During the talks, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto announced the decision of the Finnish side to allocate 1 million euros to support the activities of this Trust Fund.
