A delegation of Uzbekistan attends the UN Climate Action Summit

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The United Nations Headquarters in New York hosted the Climate Action Summit, which was attended by the heads of state and government of more than 60 countries, as well as leaders of several international organizations.
Uzbekistan delegation was led by Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, Bori Alikhanov.
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the event, and called on world politicians, businessmen, civil society representatives to make concrete commitments to prevent global warming.
“The best science, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, tells us that any temperature rise above 1.5 degrees will lead to major and irreversible damage to the ecosystems that support us,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. “Science tells us that on our current path, we face at least 3-degrees Celsius of global heating by the end of the century.”
Uzbekistan delegation informed about activities carried out in Uzbekistan to implement the provisions of the Paris Agreement through the developed Strategy for the transition to a green economy, which is aimed at consistent modernization of industry, improving energy efficiency and energy saving in key sectors of the economy, development of renewable energy sources.
Foreign partners were also provided with information on the upcoming high-level international conference under the auspices of the UN “Aral Sea area – environmental innovations and technologies zone”, scheduled in Nukus for 25 October.
During the visit to New York, the delegation of Uzbekistan met with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Climate Action Summit Luis Alfonso de Alba, UAE Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Tani bin Ahmed al-Zeyudi, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General for Human Security Yukio Takasu, Assistant Administrator, Director of the UNDP Regional Office for Europe and the CIS Marianne Spolaric-Egger, Director General for Global Affairs m. Japanese Foreign Minister, Ambassador Tammki Tsukada, Advisor to the Minister for Environmental Change of Spain L. Muriyo, Director for Climate and Environment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, Ambassador Christian de Lannoy, Ambassador for Climate Change Canada Patricia Fuller.
The foreign partners were informed in detail about measures taken in Uzbekistan to fulfill obligations under the Paris Agreement, as well as to reduce the negative consequences of the Aral Sea disaster, the socio-economic development of the Aral Sea region, including as part of international cooperation to ensure the effective operation of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea region.
