President signs law on the protection of women from harassment

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a law “On the protection of women from harassment and violence” on 2 September 2019.

In accordance with the Law, a victim of harassment and violence has the right to appeal to the relevant authorities or court with a statement about the perfect harassment or violence, to receive free legal advice, economic, social, psychological, medical and other assistance.

A victim of harassment and violence when applying to the court with a petition for compensation for material damage and non-pecuniary damage is exempted from state duty.

The law indicates the authorized bodies that protect women from harassment and violence.

These bodies are required to familiarize the victim of harassment and violence in languages that she understands, with information on protection mechanisms, types of assistance and services provided.

In particular, the internal affairs bodies, upon receiving an oral or written message about harassment and violence, are obliged to take urgent measures to suppress such actions and prevent them individually.

This Law shall enter into force on the day of its official publication.
