Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- At the invitation of the US State Department, the Uzbek delegation led by Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov took part in the second Ministerial Conference on the Promotion of Religious Freedoms in Washington, on 18 July 2019.
The delegation of Uzbekistan took part at the Ministerial Conference in 2018 for the first time.
The delegation of Uzbekistan included the first deputy chairman of the Senate of Oliy Majlis Sodik Safoev, Minister of Justice Ruslanbek Davletov, director of the National Center for Human Rights Akmal Saidov and others.
The conference is recognized as the largest international forum on human rights issues in the history of the US State Department. Over 1000 representatives from 106 countries at the level of heads of foreign affairs agencies, heads of international organizations, religious leaders and civil society participated in its work. The main agenda of the conference is to ensure the observance of freedom of religion and belief, through counteracting intolerance, persecution, discrimination, and violence on the basis of religion.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov spoke at the forum. The conference participants were informed in detail about the measures taken in the country in the field of human rights, especially to ensure religious freedom, as an important item in the reform program in Uzbekistan. It was separately emphasized on the improvement and liberalization of national legislation regarding religious organizations, the improvement of the system of religious education and the enhancement of the role of women in the religious education of young people.
The Uzbek official explained measures taken in the country to decriminalize and de-radicalization convicted of crimes related to religion, as the embodiment of the main principle - "education against ignorance."
The participation of the delegation of the republic in this important event demonstrates the recognition of the progress of reforms and transformations in the country in the field of ensuring freedom of religion. In December last year, by decision of the US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, Uzbekistan for the first time since 2006 was removed from the list of countries of particular concern in the field of religious freedom.
Measures taken in Uzbekistan in this direction are highly appreciated by the leadership of the State Department. So, at the end of last month, presenting the next report on religious freedom for 2018, the head of the US foreign affairs agency indicated Uzbekistan in the context of positive trends in the world.
According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Washington, the United States Institute of Peace is planning to discuss legal reforms in this area, including the draft law “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations”, in one of the leading analytical centers of America - the United States Peace Institute. Representatives of the State Department, the Helsinki Commission and the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), as well as a number of international experts, will participate in the round table.
The participation of the delegation of Uzbekistan in the panel discussion “Promoting stability and economic development through religious freedom”, held at the site of the International Union of Bilateral Chambers of Commerce and Industry, is planned separately. During the event, issues of ensuring religious freedoms will be discussed, as one of the important factors for increasing the country’s trade and investment attractiveness.
