Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The fourth meeting of the Working Group on the Development of Railway Transport of the Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) was held Tashkent.
In addition to representatives of railway administrations from more than 10 countries of Asia and Europe, the meeting was also attended by members of a number of international organizations, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and others.
A key aspect of the agenda of the current meeting was the issue of coordinating practical measures for the implementation of the Strategy for the Development of CAREC Rail Transport to 2020. CAREC member countries are currently working on the implementation of the Strategy for the Development of Railway Transport for 2016-2030.
Based on this request, ADB has so far mobilized a new technical assistance project. In this regard, the meeting considered the proposed approaches and components of the new technical assistance to accelerate the implementation of the Railway Strategy, announced in 2018 at the 17th meeting of the CAREC Transport Sector Coordinating Committee in Istanbul (Turkey).
In the context of the proposals, a sectoral assessment, a subregional model of rail transportation, support for projects and activities to develop the capacity of the railway industry are included. Participants of the meeting heard reports on the themes of a strategy for reforming the railway industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the development of investment projects within the framework of CAREC.
By the way, we note that at present the CAREC countries connect approximately 25 thousand kilometers of main railway corridors. At the same time, the existing railway network does not always correspond to the changing structure of trade flows for which it is intended to be serviced.
At the same time, the railways have sufficient potential to transform the region from a landlocked into a region with established land connections. At the heart of the CAREC railway strategy is the main goal - rail transport should be the preferred type of transport for trade, fast, economical, accessible to the customer and easy to use throughout the region by 2030.
These days, the 18th meeting of the CAREC Transport Sector Coordinating Committee also took place, the main task of which was to review the implementation of the Transport and Trade Facilitation Strategy until 2020.
The focus was on recent advances in railways, road asset management, road safety, and cross-border traffic. This included the consideration and discussion of projects and the identification of actions for a promising future leading to the implementation of the CAREC Transport Strategy until 2030.
