Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Within the framework of the first eco-marathon UzWaterAware with the use of water-saving technologies in Qoqand (Fergana region) several events were held at once, including master classes on planting 2000 trees with the use of a “hydrogel”, which allows saving about 50% of water during irrigation.
In Nukus, the eco-marathon was held in the format of training on covering water and environmental issues for practicing journalists of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Khorezm region, as well as for students of the journalism department of the Karakalpak State University named after Berdah.
The event was organized by the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia within the framework of the UzWaterAware project funded by the European Union with the support of the Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan and the State Committee on Ecology of Uzbekistan.
“I would like to separately note the attention of government agencies, organizations and local authorities to the environmental initiatives of the project in Qoqand and Nukus, as well as their productive cooperation with NGOs involved in the activities,” said Shahnoza Umarova, director of the CAREC branch in Uzbekistan. “For example, in Qoqand, our eco-marathon was supported by the State Committee on Ecology of Uzbekistan, the city khokimiyat headed by hokim Maruf Usmanov, in close partnership with one of the most active non-governmental organizations of the Ferghana region, Salomatlik Plus Ecology.” Such mutual support allowed a small team of UzWaterAware to plant two thousand seedlings using a hydrogel in three days, because the process involved the improvement of the city. On the first day of the eco-marathon, employees of Obodonlashtirish boshqarmasi and Kommunkhizmat participated in a workshop on planting trees with hydrogel, and on the second and third days they actively helped hundreds of young volunteers to plant trees on the principle of water conservation. Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, farmers from several agricultural regions of the Ferghana Valley also participated in our water-saving master classes. Judging by the involvement of farmers, the information received about the possibilities of saving water using a hydrogel presented them with real practical interest.”
As part of the organization of special training for the media in Nukus, Shakhnoza Umarova noted the support and participation of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the administration of the Berdakh Karakalpak State University, as well as the Karakalpak branches of the Youth Union and the Association for the Support of Children and Families.
The water-saving eco-marathon of UzWaterAware in Nukus embraced media representatives from Karakalpakstan and the neighboring Khorezm region, as well as students of the journalism department of the Karakalpak State University named after Berdakh, where the event took place. The project pays special attention to the coverage of water-environmental issues, “data journalism”, the correct presentation of information about problems in the field of water conservation and their solutions.
The training on the development of modern journalistic skills was conducted by Saida Sulaimanova and Daria Osmanova, who have extensive experience in practical journalism and teaching at the faculties of journalism at the Uzbek universitites, with the participation of specialists from the UzWaterAware project team Rezida Erdman and Ekaterina Ustinenko.
Following the results, the training participants noted that they received a lot of useful information about the modern toolkit of a journalist, web programs and new opportunities for presenting materials on water and environmental topics in order to maximize the involvement of a wide audience.
The main objective of the eco-marathon in Qoqanda was a clear demonstration of technology that reduces water consumption during watering plants. When planting 2000 trees, including pine, paulownia, catalpa and lilac, hydrogel was used - a scientific development adapted from local scientific laboratories.
According to the agronomist, the head of the Al-Bukhory scientific team, Alisher Turdimatov, the hydrogel is a polymer that can absorb, accumulate and retain water, useful additives near the root system of trees and other plants, and minimize the evaporation of moisture from the soil surface. Hydrogel does not lose its properties for 3-5 years and does not have a negative impact on the ecology and soil condition. The composition of the hydrogel, adapted for agriculture, includes mineral fertilizers and trace elements that protect plants from various lesions and promote the growth and development of crops. According to the test results, an increase in the fertility of various crops by 20-50% was noted. The agronomist also noted that the product passed the necessary certification.
The three-day event in Qoqand brought together the most diverse representatives of society around the idea of preserving the ecological balance, as well as a productive and economical approach to natural resources.
Geographically, several streets and social facilities of the city of Qoqand were covered. In the park to named after Furkat, especially for farmers and employees of city improvement services of the city, “Obodonlashtirish boshqarmasi” and the Kommunkhizmat agency held open workshops on the use of a water-saving hydrogel when planting trees and other plants in order to reduce water consumption in arid climate.
Similar events were held at the Nuroniy Foundation, as well as on several central streets with the participation of students of the Qoqand State Pedagogical Institute, activists of the Youth Union and members of local KVN teams. Practical support and instructing of young people in planting trees using a hydrogel was carried out by the specialists of Obodonlashtirish boshqarmasi and the Kommunkhizmat Agency, who had a day earlier held a master class on the use of water-saving technologies in the UzWaterAware eco-marathon.
Also within the framework of the UzWaterAware eco-marathon, an “open eco-talk” was held on the topic of water resources in the territory of the maternity hospital in Qoqand and secondary school No. 3.
Especially for teachers, a game training session was conducted and brightly illustrated information booklets about the importance of rational consumption of water in everyday life and agriculture were distributed so that teachers could further increase the students’ awareness of the need for economical water use as part of eco-lessons.
“At the master class of the UzWaterAware project, at the request of the organizers, teachers in environmental studies, biology and chemistry from 40 schools of Qoqand were invited. - says the director of the Qoqand school No. 3 Zalikha Soliyev. - Indeed, the culture of consumption of natural resources should be inculcated in children through adults. And the hydrogel, which we were told about today, aroused great interest among all teachers, because such technologies can reduce water consumption for the sake of the future of children. The participants of the seminar promised to disseminate information among colleagues, as well as schoolchildren and their parents during open lessons. Because it is important for each of us. ”
Water-saving eco-marathons of UzWaterAware with events of various formats will continue throughout 2019 in Tashkent, regions of the Republic of Uzbekistan and in the Republic of Karakalpakstan.
