Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 23 November 2018, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov in Brussels met with High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini.
The sides exchanged views on the agenda of the next inter-regional meeting “Central Asia - European Union” opening today in Brussels, and discussed priorities for expanding cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union.
As it was stressed, the summit scheduled for 2019 will open a new page in the history of bilateral relations. In this context, the negotiations on the draft Agreement on Extended Partnership and Cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union, which begin on 23 November, testify to the intention of the parties to progressively strengthen and develop cooperation.
It was noted that the large-scale reforms to liberalize the economy being carried out in Uzbekistan open up great prospects for a wider presence of European business and investment in our market, growth of mutual trade. In the first 9 months of 2018, the trade turnover between Uzbekistan and the EU amounted to US$2.23 billion, which is 17% more than the same period of the previous year.
The heads of the foreign affairs agencies also discussed the implementation of the provisions of the Tashkent Declaration, adopted on March 27, 2018 at an international conference on Afghanistan, in which the EU delegation led by Federica Mogherini participated.
Upon completion of the negotiations, Federica Mogherini submitted to Abdulaziz Kamilov a draft Agreement on extended partnership and cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union, which should replace the Agreement on partnership and cooperation between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the European Communities and their member states that was in effect on July 1, 1999.
