Atabek Nazirov: “We need to start teaching children to critical thinking in schools”

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Children in schools should not sit and cram in materials in classes, but it is necessary to develop critical thinking among students. This was stated last week by Deputy Minister of Public Education Atabek Nazirov at the Global Entrepreneurship Week Uzbekistan.
“From the first grade we don’t teach children to ask the question “Why?”, we don’t teach critical thinking. This is our big problem. Now we are working with foreign partners to study their experience in this area and adapt it for our teachers. The teaching methods should also teach children how to independently acquire and master knowledge. If we teach children critical thinking, they will be able to find answers to questions in the Internet era,” said Atabek Nazirov.
The public education system should not only provide fundamental and humanitarian knowledge, and prepare for admission to higher educational institutions, but first and foremost prepare young people for independent living, and provide the skills necessary for labor and business, he said. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Public Education.
The deputy head of the Ministry of Public Education said that there are about 10,000 schools in the field of public education, where about 500,000 teachers work and almost 6 million children are enrolled. Now, unfortunately, only 10% of high school graduates have the opportunity to enroll in universities. For Uzbekistan, which has no access to the sea and cheap logistics, it will be difficult to compete with many other countries, especially in the export market of manufactured finished goods. But there are sectors where you can compete. In his opinion, one such sector is the export of services in the information technology market. Having mastered the knowledge of design or programming, our specialists could provide services to foreign companies and earn decent money. There is also a huge potential in the domestic market for high value-added services, in such sectors as health care, education, tourism, financial and legal services, and many others.
“We are starting to revise curricula, for example, on information technology, to give our students the opportunity to learn programming and earn money after graduation,” Atabek Nazirov added. “We also want to give high school students the opportunity to choose the subjects they want to study. Our educational system is based on the Soviet system, and we are trying to teach children everything at once. We cannot make chemists or historians from them all. There is a need to modify curricula. I studied in the USA, where students in the last years of their studies can choose subjects, which they are interested in. We must enable the student to study what he is interested in and realize his potential. ”
“We are now promoting the idea of decentralization and deregulation of schools. We must abolish existing rules and provide directors and school teachers with the opportunity to form curricula, how they want to teach and what classes they should be, but this is not an easy and complicated process,” the Deputy Minister said.
