Uzbek, Russian parliamentary cooperation commission holds meeting

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Deputy Chairman of the Council of Federation Ilyas Umakhanov and First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sadyk Safaev held the third meeting of the Commission on Cooperation of the Council of the Federation and the Senate of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Opening the meeting, Ilyas Umakhanov stressed that bilateral contacts between the upper chambers of the parliaments of Russia and Uzbekistan are developing actively, progressively and meaningfully.
The vice-speaker of the Federation Council called the historic visit of the President of Russia to Tashkent on 18–19 October 2018 and the holding of the first Forum of Regions of the two countries at the same time. “We proceed from the fact that parliaments have the right and can provide not only legislative support for the decisions of the leaders of our states, but also develop their own legislative and regional cooperation mechanisms in a number of areas,” said Ilyas Umakhanov.
The Vice-Speaker of the Federation Council reviewed the main areas of the Uzbek-Russian inter-parliamentary cooperation, made a number of specific proposals for further improvement and revitalization of the bilateral Commission.
Sadyk Safayev said that cooperation with the Russian Federation is a top priority in the foreign policy of Uzbekistan and is enshrined in law. “It is not only important for two countries, but also for development and security of the region as a whole. We highly appreciate the fact that the leadership of Russia firmly supported the renewed policy that is being conducted in Uzbekistan today,” said the First Vice-Speaker of the Senate of Uzbekistan. He called positive the formation of new mechanisms of interaction between the two countries, including the strengthening of interregional ties.
During the meeting, it was noted that the second Forum of the Regions of Russia and Uzbekistan will be held in Moscow in 2019. Sadyk Safayev said that the forum of the regions had established contacts, which until then had practically not existed. "More than one hundred joint projects have been launched."
In accordance with the agenda of the meeting, members of the Commission considered a number of issues. In particular, the progress of the implementation of the “roadmap” developed at the second meeting of the Commission, the implementation of the agreements reached at the summit and high-level meetings, trends and prospects for cooperation in the agro-industrial sector, the use of digital technologies to intensify cooperation between Uzbekistan and Russia, the prospects development of cooperation in the field of tourism.
The meeting participants agreed to implement parliamentary assistance and control in the legal settlement of issues of harmonization of the laws of Russia and Uzbekistan in the field of digital technologies.
In addition, the relevant committees of the Council of Federation and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis are tasked with facilitating the exchange of information and consultations between tour operators and agents on strengthening interaction in the field of tourism.
The parties also approved the agenda of the fourth meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Commission, which is scheduled to be held in the second half of 2019 in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
