Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Ministry of Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan hosted a meeting with the Latvian delegation led by the Speaker of the Latvian Seimas Inara Murnietse.
According to Inari Murnietse, Latvia attaches great importance to development of transport and logistics cooperation. In this regard, the Latvian side invited to consider the issue of increasing the frequency of flights between the capitals of both countries. In turn, the Uzbek side suggested to consider the issue of discounts on tariffs for carriage of goods, including rail transport.
"Latvia is an important partner of Uzbekistan as it plays a key role in the foreign trade of the republic due to its geographical location and developed transport infrastructure. The existing transport corridor with access to the ports of the Latvian cities of Riga and Liepaja has a significant potential for further increase in the volume of cargo transportation in both directions. Optimizing tariffs for the transit of goods through the transport systems of the two countries will significantly increase the volume of freight traffic across the territories of Uzbekistan and Latvia," - Minister of Foreign Trade Jamshid Khodjaev said.
Both sides confirmed the expediency of working out the issues before the meeting of the bilateral Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on economic, industrial and scientific-technical cooperation.
It is worth noting that the IGC plays an important role in building relations between the two countries. The Latvian side informed that the agenda of the forthcoming meeting of the commission is scheduled to be discussed within the framework of the planned visit of the Minister of Environment Protection and Regional Development of the Republic of Latvia, K. Gerhards to Uzbekistan. In addition to intergovernmental negotiations, Latvian parliamentarians proposed to establish the Uzbek-Latvian Business Council, which will allow business circles of both countries to establish direct contacts.
Within the framework of the meeting, the Latvian delegation noted readiness for promotion of trade and economic interests of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Baltic region.
The Latvian side also announced plans to open a branch of the Higher School of Management of Information Systems in the direction "Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant Services" in Ferghana, as well as its interest in cooperation in the areas of e-government and green technologies, where it managed to accumulate considerable experience.
