Uzbekistan plans to attract ADB funds to modernize hydropower sector

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan plans to attract resources of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to modernize hydropower industry.
According to the website of the bank, Uzbekistan plans to attract the ADB loan for US$215 million.
The project will modernize three existing hydropower plants (HPP), construct three new run-of-river small-sized HPPs, and provide capacity development for mini/micro HPPs development in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The project will contribute to increasing renewable energy and access to reliable energy, and building capacity for sustainable clean energy development.
The sides will launch development of the concept of the project. It is expected that the ADB will allocate US$2.5 million technical assistance to development of the project.
The Government of Uzbekistan approved a programme on development of hydro power industry for 2016-2020 with total cost of US$889.4 million in November 2015.
Within the programme, Uzbekistan will build nine new and modernize 15 hydro power stations, which will allow additionally to general up to 5.25 billion KWH of electricity a year.
