UNDP: adaption rather than confrontation – right strategy for increasing climate resilience

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Increasing climate resilience is a sensitive and mostly discussed issue in environmental circles all over the world. Subject matter experts and scientists capable to put forward innovative solutions to this global issue are getting involved in the process of finding the solution.
Negative climate changes, without a doubt, pose a serious threat, in particular, to the developing Central Asian countries, including Uzbekistan. So, the Aral Sea area, representing a part of the region, has been heavily affected by severe impacts of climate changes associated with degradation of the Aral Sea.
UNDP in Uzbekistan, throughout the entire duration of activities, has been supporting the initiatives aimed at environmental protection and climate adaptation, effectively contributing to the social welfare and sustainable development of the republic. The joint project of the UNDP in Uzbekistan and the Centre of Hydro-meteorological Service under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan “Developing climate resilience of farming communities in the drought prone parts of Uzbekistan” funded by the Adaptation Fund under UNFCCC was launched in 2014.
The project will be implemented in the northern regions of Karakalpakstan where, over a six-year period, the assistance will be provided to the central, regional and local governments, most vulnerable communities, farmers and pastoralists to withstand the current and future negative effects of aridification, and to increase the resilience to negative climate changes in this region.
Within the scope of the project, demonstration workshops on “Ways to increase climate resilience of farming communities in the northern regions of the Republic of Karakalpakstan” will be held on 10 and 12 November in Nukus and Kegeyli.
Reports and presentations will provid the results of the first year of activities in this area; the necessity to improve the hydro-meteorological and climate monitoring, aimed at ensuring planning, design and implementation of measures for climate adaptation, was clarified. Special attention was devoted to outlooks of greenhouse cultivation development in northern regions, introduction of early warning system for aridification, laser land levelling, water-saving technologies and so forth.
Members of the Interagency Working Group established by the Government resolution and composed of the representatives of ministries and agencies of Uzbekistan and Karakalpakstan, executives of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, as well as representatives of the scientific community, NGOs and media, are taking part in the discussions held. Considerable interest in the subject was shown by the leaders of village community assemblies, citizens, farmers and dekhkans of the northern regions of Karakalpakstan.
The Hub coordinating the activities of the Farmers Support Centers in Nukus and the corresponding Center in the Kegeyli region on climate adaptation issues will be opened upon the completion of workshops. Relevant office equipment was supplied to the mentioned Centers in order to increase their technical capacities.
