Russian envoy: Uzbekistan saves over 1.5m people during World War II

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan saved over 1.5 million people from hunger and death during the World War II, including 300,000 children, Ambassador of Russia Vladimir Tyurdenev said at the international conference dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Victory in the World War II.
He said that men and women from all nations of Soviet Union ensured victory over fascism. He said that 15 divisions and brigades were created in Uzbekistan during the wartimes. Military schools, located in Tashkent, trained thousands of servicemen. About 6.5 million people lived in Uzbekistan on the eve of war and 1.5 million people went to war, the envoy said. About 420,000 citizens of Uzbekistan did not return to their homes, while 640,000 people were wounded, he added.
Ambassador underlined that 120,000 citizens of Uzbekistan were awarded with orders and medals. About 280 people from Uzbekistan received title Hero of Soviet Union and 82 persons received Orders of Gloary.
He added that during the war time Uzbekistan held leading positions in economic supplies. Over 100 industrial enterprises were re-located into Uzbekistan.
Tyurdenov said that Uzbekistan received large number of people at that time. Uzbekistan saved over 1.5 million evacuated people from hunger and death, including about 300,000 children, who evicted from blocked Leningrad, Belarus, Poland and Ukraine. He noted that Uzbekistan became second home for thousands of people.
Russian envoy said Uzbek people contributed to victory in the World War II with their courage, firmness and selflessness.
