Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- UNICEF jointly with Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan and WHO conducted satellite conference “Acceleration of progress on new-born and child survival through national action and international cooperation” in the framework of the VII National Congress of Pediatricians in Tashkent. About 60 leading national experts, medical practitioners, scientists as well as international experts took part in the conference.
Uzbek specialists presented the best practices in maternal and child healthcare at both national and primary levels. Recommendations were made on the supportive supervision to ensure sustainability in quality health care services. “Key direction in public health is improvement of services to reduce child mortality,” – said Professor Dilorom Akhmedova, Chief Pediatrician of the Ministry of Health, and Director of the Republican Scientific Center of Pediatrics. “Working in close collaboration with WHO and UNICEF we implement effective technologies such as neonatal resuscitation, exclusive breastfeeding and proper nutrition, growth monitoring, micronutrients supplementation and IMCI.”
The conference also reviewed results of Interim evaluation of the project “Improvement of Maternal and Child Healthcare Services. Phase II” which is being conducted by the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, the European Union and UNICEF. ”The project intends to improve the quality of health services delivered to mothers and children in the nation, and ultimately to reduce maternal and child mortality,” – said Mr Robert Fuderich, UNICEF Representative. “Our joint efforts aim to support on-going health system reform in Uzbekistan, ensuring that national health services meet international standards, so that high levels of maternal and child health can be maintained,” – he added.
International experts from WHO and LDS charity shared the new tools, strategies and innovations in the field of new-born resuscitation and management of childhood illnesses.
In collaboration with national and international partners, UNICEF has worked to improve quality of healthcare in Uzbekistan. Initiatives in this field have included integrating international standards and practices into safe motherhood and child care, capacity building of healthcare providers, and supporting high impact, cost effective maternal and child health programmes.
UNICEF is also dedicated to enhancing preventative medicine in Uzbekistan. Within this field, UNICEF conducted nationwide immunisation initiatives, developed and supported the implementation of laws regarding nutrition and food fortification, and promoted exclusive breastfeeding through the Baby-Friendly Hospitals Initiative, advocacy programmes and public awareness campaigns.
