Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a roundtable dedicated to implementation of initiative on creation of Central Asia nuclear free zone, initiated by the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov at the 48th session of the UN General Assembly on 28 September 1993.
MPs of Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, research institutes, experts and others participated in the event.
The participants of the roundtable underlined importance of the initiative on formation of the Central Asian nuclear free zone to preserve and strengthen regional peace and stability in Central Asia, support global regime of non-proliferation, disarmament and global security, the press service of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis said.
During the event, the participants discussed main stages of creation of nuclear free zone in Central Asia – from announcement of initiative, attracting supporters from the states of the region, the UN and international community. It was said that the development of agreement on nuclear free zone in Central Asia required a long and hard work from the states of Central Asia and five nuclear power states.
It was underlined that international conference “Central Asia – zone free from nuclear weapon”, held in Tashkent on 15 September 1997, played a key role in creation of nuclear free zone in Central Asia. The participants of the conference supported creation of nuclear free zone and highly rated efforts of Uzbekistan and its partners in preventing nuclear dissemination and other transnational threats. In the result of the conference, the regional expert group was created to prepare the agreement on nuclear free zone in Central Asia.
In 1997-2002, the group held several meetings in Geneva, Ashgabat, Tashkent, Sapporo and Samarkand at the assistance of IAEA. On 7-9 February 2005, Tashkent hosted the seventh meeting of the working group and agreed position of the Central Asian state on the text of the agreement, taking into account proposals and comments of five nuclear powers and the UN Department on legal issues.
The agreement on nuclear free zone in Central Asia was signed on 8 September 2006. Five nuclear powers – Great Britain, China, Russia, United States and France, the United National, IAEA actively participated in development of the agreement. The agreement also received support of the UN General Assembly. Uzbekistan was the first country in the region, which ratified the agreement (on 10 May 2007). After all states ratified the treaty, it came into force on 21 March 2009.
