Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Latvia highly rates role of Uzbekistan in the region as a guarantee of stability and considers it as a strategic partner of the Baltics country, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs said in an interview of Jahon news agency.
Edgars Rinkēvičs underlined that Latvia considers Uzbekistan as important country for the European Union and NATO.
Edgars Rinkēvičs underlined that Latvia will chair the European Union in the first half of 2015 and one of priorities will be to give powerful impulse to dialogue between the European Union and Central Asian states.
Speaking about stability and security of the region, Latvian official highly rated contribution of Uzbekistan to social-economic development of Afghanistan. He underlined implementation of infrastructure projects, electricity supply and cargo transit to Afghanistan.
Underlining bilateral trade-economic cooperation, Latvian Foreign Minister underlined that dynamic growth of Uzbekistan’s economy and its potentially are good foundation for further development of interaction in this direction. He said that the countries could cooperate in tourism, pharmaceuticals, light and textile industry, cargo transportation, food industry and agriculture sectors.
Today large number of enterprises, created with Uzbek partners, operates in Latvia. Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed hope number of Latvian companies, working in Uzbekistan, and joint Latvian-Uzbek enterprises will increase.
Latvian minister also underlined that cooperation of two states is developing in cultural and humanitarian spheres. He said that about 200 students from Uzbekistan are studying in Latvia.
He said that Uzbekistan and Latvia are working on agreements of cooperation in healthcare, environment and education sectors and once they are signed they will expand bilateral cooperation in these areas.
