Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The events in Karakalpakstan are an internal affair of Uzbekistan, the Kremlin has no doubt that the problems will be resolved with the active work of the leadership, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, RIA Novosti reported.
“Uzbekistan is our ally, it is a friendly country, it is our very important partner. Everything that happens in Uzbekistan is an internal affair of this country, and we have no doubt that with the active work of the leadership of the republic, the existing problems will be resolved,” Peskov told reporters.
An illegal demonstration took place in the administrative center of Karakalpakstan, Nukus, on 1 July, because of amendments to the constitution of Uzbekistan. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan, public order has been restored. The next day, the authorities of the region announced that they had detained a group of organizers of the riots, which tried to seize the authorities of the region. President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev introduced a state of emergency in Karakalpakstan from 3 July to 2 August, as well as a curfew from 21.00 to 07.00.
On Sunday, Mirziyoyev held a videoconference with all districts of Karakalpakstan. He stated that during the riots in Nukus there were casualties among the civilian population and law enforcement officers. During the conference call, it was noted that the situation in Karakalpakstan has stabilized and is returning to normal.
On 2 July, Mirziyoyev, during a trip to Nukus, proposed to keep in the current constitution of the country the clauses on the sovereignty of Karakalpakstan, as well as on the right of the republic to secede from Uzbekistan. Deputies of the Parliament of Uzbekistan on Monday unanimously voted for the preservation of Articles 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75 of the Constitution of Uzbekistan in the current version.
The Republic of Karakalpakstan with a population of about 2 million people is located in the north-west of Uzbekistan and is the largest region of the country, occupying about 40% of its territory. In the 1990s, an agreement was signed on its entry into Uzbekistan in the status of a sovereign republic with the right to withdraw on the basis of a referendum and with two languages - Karakalpak and Uzbek.
Moscow considers the events in Karakalpakstan an internal affair of Uzbekistan, the situation is under control, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti earlier. According to him, "the authorities are acting competently, with respect for their people." There are enough forces to prevent provocations, stressed a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry.
