Uzbekistan presents environmental review in Geneva

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 13-15 November, a delegation of Uzbekistan, headed by the chairman of the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection Bahrom Kuchkarov, participated in the 25th session of the Committee on Environmental Policy of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the Foreign Ministryreported.
According to the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan in Geneva, the event was attended by experts in the field of environmental protection and statistics from more than 30 countries and 10 international organizations.
The session hosted a discussion of the Third Environmental Performance Review of Uzbekistan. Bahrom Kuchkarov presented a report on the state of the environment in the republic and informed about the ongoing large-scale reforms in this area. Particular emphasis was placed on the conservation of biodiversity, the use of natural resources, as well as the mitigation of the consequences of the Aral Sea disaster and the creation of favorable socio-environmental conditions in the Aral Sea zone.
Co-rapporteurs from Switzerland and Romania noted the progress made by the Government of Uzbekistan in meeting international obligations on the environment and sustainable development, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As a result of the session, the Third Environmental Performance Review of Uzbekistan was adopted by the participants of the event. The Chairperson of the Committee, Elisabeth Quintas, da Silva, emphasized that this review, which includes 17 chapters and more than 99 recommendations, is the most comprehensive report prepared by ECE experts.
As part of their stay in Geneva, the delegation of Uzbekistan met with the head of the ECE Environment Department, Marco Kainerem, and the director of the United Nations Environment Program for Europe Regional Office Bruno Pozzy, during which issues of further development of cooperation in the field of environmental protection and implementation prospects were discussed environmental projects in our country.
