Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 19 August 2019, a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilhom Nematov in Songdo (Republic of Korea) held talks with the Deputy Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Javier Manzanares.
The management of the GCF positively evaluated the results of work with Uzbekistan in 2017-2019. In particular, it was noted that in recent years, Uzbekistan, together with organizations accredited to the GCF, has sent several very viable and relevant projects to the Fund to attract grant funds. As noted, one of them was a joint project of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and the World Bank "Adaptation and mitigation of climate change in the Aral Sea basin" for US$19 million.
At the meeting, it was emphasized that the Aral Sea tragedy in its consequences is a global problem. So, the former and current leaders of the UN, Ban Ki-moon and António Guterres, who visited the Aral Sea in different years and saw the scale of the disaster, called the disappearance of the reservoir "the biggest environmental disaster of our time."
The parties exchanged views on the progress of consideration and approval of the projects “Improving the Disaster Risk Management System and Responding to Adaptation to Climate Change in Uzbekistan” and “Development of Agrometeorological Services to Ensure Climate-Resistant Fruit and Vegetable Production in Uzbekistan”.
At the meeting, an agenda for further cooperation was agreed and consultations were held on the procedural aspects of the procedure for reviewing project documents on the allocation of grant funds for Uzbekistan.
The head of the Uzbek delegation invited the leadership of the Green Climate Fund to take part in the UN High-level International Conference on declaring Aral Sea region a zone of environmental innovation and technology, which will be held in Nukus on 25 October 2019.
