On 10-22 June, on the basis of the Tashkent Institute of Engineers of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization (TIIIMSH), the second summer course for students of the Kazakh-German University (KGU) on the topic: “Basics of water resources management: integration of theory, practice and research” was held.
The course was organized within the framework of the joint project “Water, Education and Cooperation” (Smart Waters) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) with the support of the Ministry of Water Economy (MOC) of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Seven students of the Master's program at the National University of Uzbekistan “Institutional Water Resources Management” (IWRM), who participated in the summer school, represent such countries as Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Also among the participants were seven graduate students of TIIIMSH.
The main goal of the course is to strengthen and transfer knowledge to KGU students who will be further applied on the territory of the Central Asian region, creating a platform for dialogue between students of KGU and TIIIMSH, as well as applying the scientific and technical potential of the faculty of the Tashkent Institute.
“Ensuring water availability for future generations requires a holistic approach that views land and water as a single ecosystem. It is imperative that we look across borders and work together to solve the complex problems that arise when countries have limited natural resources. Designers, politicians, local communities, enterprises and individuals - each has their own role, and they will all be more effective in working together, ”said Gary Robbins, Director of USAID in Uzbekistan, in a welcoming speech on the day the school opened.
During 102 hours of study, students took theoretical, practical, laboratory and independent classes. In addition, on-site training was provided for irrigation and land improvement facilities in Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan.
"We at TIIIMSH are interested in further strengthening comprehensive cooperation with both our domestic and leading foreign universities, which is one of the main goals of the summer school. Cooperation between scientists and specialists gives rise to the cooperation of the younger generation, students and young professionals, regardless of in which part of the world they live, study, or work,” the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation of the TIIIMS, one of the summer school lecturers, Abdulhakim Salokhiddinov said.
As it was noted in the speech of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, “there are no other more rational ways to solve water issues in the region than consideration of the interests of all countries and peoples living in Central Asia.” This requires in-depth knowledge of both advanced management practices and the organization of the use of water resources. “This summer school pursues precisely these goals,” Salohiddinov stressed.
During the two-week course, students familiarized themselves with such modules as basics of water management at the basin level, flow patterns in irrigation systems, operational reliability and safety of hydraulic structures, operation of pumping stations and pumps, water-saving irrigation technologies, etc.
During the field lesson in Surkhandarya region, students along with journalists who joined as part of the cooperation between the two CAREC “Smart Waters” (USAID) and UzWaterAware (European Union) projects, visited such water bodies as the Amuzon-1 pumping station Oktepa ”, Tupolang reservoir, hydroelectric power station and waterworks, South Surkhan reservoir. The participants talked to their water colleagues, familiarized themselves with the processes and specifics of the operation of these facilities.
Upon completion of the course, all participants received certificates of international internship. They also shared their impressions of these two weeks.
