Urgench hosts conference on Aral Sea problems

Urgench hosted an international conference “Development of cooperation in the Aral Sea Basin to mitigate consequences of environmental catastrophe” on 28-29 October 2014.
The international conference was organized on initiative of the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. The conference was aimed at mobilizing efforts of the world community to implement programmes and projects on improvement of environmental and socio-economic situation in Aral Sea and boosting the international cooperation to weather the negative repercussions of the ecological disaster.
Representatives of international and regional organizations, financial institutions and specialists on ecology, climate change and water management from Austria, Hungary, Germany, Spain, China, Latvia, Malaysia, United States, France, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan and other countries attended the event.
The participants watched a film on problems associated with the unfolding situation in the basin of the Aral Sea as well as those concerning the realization of region-wide projects.
At the conference, the participants discussed reasons of drying of Aral Seas, consequences of pollution of atmosphere, implementation of the projects on improving ecologic situation in Aral Sea Basin and mitigation of consequences of ecologic crisis.
During panel sessions at the conference, the attendees discussed adopting measures to preserve the gene pool and boost the health of the population residing in the environmental risk zone, mobilizing necessary economic stimuli and mechanisms for bolstering the living standards and quality in Aral Sea Basin, restoring the ecological system and the biodiversity in the region.
